She Rocks! Dionne Hammiel, Recipient of the 2015 Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Awards

Sometimes, when Dionne Hammiel wants the attention of her rambunctious kindergarten class, she stands on the table. Other times, she lowers her voice to a whisper, making her instructions a very important secret that every child strains to hear.

The hushed message at John Burroughs Education Campus in the District was utterly routine on a recent day: “We need to go to the bathroom, drink some water, come back, and pick out our books to read.”

But the children were instantly alight, excited about the next step in their kindergarten adventure.

Hammiel, with her infectious enthusiasm and outstanding results, is known for the towering expectations she sets for the small children in her class and the deeply analytical approach she brings to her own practice and the skills each child is developing.

“She creates an environment in her class where they really want to do well,” said her principal, Aqueelha James. “Her students want to see her energy, and they really, really work very hard.”

Dionne

Dionne Hammiel

The result? “The children who leave her are not on the first-grade level,” James said. “They are beyond that.”

Hammiel, 37, is the daughter of a schoolteacher, as well as the cousin and niece and granddaughter of a family full of schoolteachers. Her approach is also close to home: “I look at my students as my own kids,” she said.

The Guyana native moved to the District when she was 11, went to Orr Elementary and eventually graduated from Wilson High School. She majored in human development and family studies at Pennsylvania State University, then started her career as a social worker at a local day-care center. She became a teacher at a Head Start center and found her niche in early childhood education. She has been teaching at John Burroughs in the Brookland neighborhood for nearly 15 years.

Kindergarten has become more academically rigorous in the past decade, and Hammiel keeps a “data wall” at home tracking her students’ performance. She sets goals for each child and celebrates their progress. She holds their parents to high standards, too, giving them clear directions for what she expects the children to do during spring break.

She said she loves teaching kindergarten because the children are “sponges.”

“The more you give them, the more they will take,” Hammiel said. “They want to please you, and every day there is the joy of seeing their success.”

She teaches lessons in creative ways to appeal to different learning styles.

When the children were having trouble with vowels, she wrote a song they could sing using their hands, with each finger representing a vowel. Now when they are writing, she sees them taking a break to look at their hands before returning to the page.

When introducing a word, she reads it in a sentence, shows a picture or acts out the meaning. And she is always looking for challenging words to share.

James, the principal, said she was skeptical when she saw that Hammiel’s lesson plan early in the year included “array,” “linear” and “circular.” But later she heard the children using the words when discussing the line they had formed in the hallway.

“From the outside, you think, ‘These are kindergartners,’ ” James said. “But they rise to the occasion.”

“The moon, that’s where I set the bar,” Hammiel said. “When they leave me, they go out there and shine.”

The Washington Post has honored teaching excellence in the Washington region for three decades, with more than 500 men and women winning the Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award for their work in the classroom, creativity and contribution to the improvement of education.

The awards are named for Agnes Meyer, wife of Eugene Meyer, who purchased The Post in 1933. She was a staunch supporter and defender of public education and believed in the motto that still guides the awards: “Quality education is essential to the well-being of our society, and good teachers are the foundation of our educational system.”

The Post also honors the region’s principals with the Distinguished Educational Leadership Awards, recognizing those who go beyond the day-to-day demands of their position to create an exceptional educational environment.

The teachers   are examples of what works in the classrooms,  such as tutoring high school freshman at risk of failing, recruiting students for AP classes who didn’t consider themselves advanced-course material, and writing songs to help kindergartners master vowels. Winners in both categories receive a $1,000 cash award. Here, The Post’s education team profiles a selection of the 2015 winners, taking us into their classrooms and showing why they are some of Washington’s best educators.

She Rocks! Shaya Hansen - Award Winner Singer/Dancer/Music Composer

Marianna Hansen (born 17 February 1983), known professionally as Shaya, is a Danish–Greek singer of Guyanese and Indian descent. Shaya was a member of the girl band Hi-5, the result of the Greek version of the talent show Popstars. She is currently pursuing a solo career and finished fifth in Greece’s version of Dancing on Ice.

Shaya was born in Denmark to a Danish father and a multiracial Guyanese mother of Greenlandic and Indian descent. The family moved to Sweden after her parents’ divorce when she was 6. At the age of 12, Shaya and her family immigrated once more, settling in Thessaloniki, Greece. Her mother was a disc jockey before Shaya’s birth. Although Shaya enjoyed singing and dancing from a young age, including performing with SambaSchools in Copenhagen Carnival, she became interested in becoming a singer by luck when she was persuaded to get on stage to sing a song with co-workers after work at a club she worked at in Kavala around age 18.

In 2001, Shaya released her first solo single titled “Release Me” and promoted it around Europe. Between 2001 and 2003, she performed in many clubs in Thessaloniki. Following the encouragement of a friend, in 2003 Shaya entered the Greek version of the talent show Popstars and won a spot in the girl band Hi-5. Shaya, along with the four other girls, Marlen Angelidou, Irini Psyhrami, Froso Papaharalambous, and Nancy Stergiopoulou, had two chart-topping albums and eight singles in two years. The band decided on an amicable split in 2005 after the contract with their record label expired.

After Hi-5 split up, Shaya began a solo career, appearing live in various venues. In 2008, Shaya and Greek singer Kostas Martakis were chosen to record a Greek-language version of Right Here, Right Now from the soundtrack of the Disney film High School Musical 3: Senior Year. The cover was titled “Mikroi Theoi” (Little Gods) and was released as a single from the Greek edition of the film’s soundtrack; a music video followed with Martakis and Shaya molded together with scenes from the film. The music video was included as a bonus feature on the Greek edition of the film’s home video release. Walt Disney Records, via its international distribution partner EMI, commissioned several local market, foreign-language versions of songs from the entire High School Musical series, although “Mikroi Theoi” was the only Greek version song.

In 2009, Shaya teamed up with Greek hip-hop group Stavento to release the duet “Prin Se Gnoriso” (Before I Meet You), which garnered them a nomination and win for Best Video-Clip Hip-Hop at the 2009 MAD Video Music Awards. Later that year in 2009, Shaya also teamed up with rapper Stereo Mike to release the duet “Esi Kai Ego” (You and I), while she was also part of the Amita Motion Tour 2009.

In 2010, Shaya signed with the newly created management, production, and artist development company My Group, active in the dance-pop and club music markets, as well under contract with Sony Music Greece. In May 2010, she released the single “Paizis”. In June 2010, she teamed up with Greek DJ and fellow label mate Mark F. Angelo for the song “Far From Everything”, which was also chosen as the theme song for the 2010 MAD Video Music Awards, and became a summer hit. The duo also recorded the song “My Radio”, which became the official jingle for MAD Radio 106.2. Both songs were featured on Mark F. Angelo’s debut album Play.Pause.Stop.Rewind. Following the collaboration, Shaya released the first single from her debut solo album in November 2010 titled “In Your Eyes”. She released her debut solo album titled Resurrection in January 2011. Shaya penned music and lyrics to a number of the tracks on the album.

In July 2011, Shaya and Mark F. Angelo were chosen as the opening act for David Guetta’s concert in Montenegro. In late 2011, Shaya along with Mark F. Angelo earned the win for Best Greek Act at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards, for their collaboration on the single “Far From Everything” as well as several other track collaborations between the two artists. The duo was also shortlisted for Best European Act. In November 2011, Greece’s version of Dancing on Ice premiered on ANT1 featuring Shaya as a contestant. She finished fifth in the show.

In December 2011, it was reported that Shaya was in the recording studio recording material for her new album scheduled to be released in the new year. The album was to feature more house and dance elements and less pop elements than her previous album. Following the closure of her record label Sony Music Greece, the album did not end up being released.

In 2013, Shaya performed a cover of “Walking on Air” alongside Anise K and Ivi Adamou at the Mad Video Music Award 2013. Later that same year and into 2014, Shaya took up a residency at the newly opened Fleurs nightclub at the Radisson Royal Hotel in Dubai. In between shows, she also held one of three lead singer roles in the musical Priscilla, at the Badminton theater in Athens.

During summer 2014 Shaya toured around Greece performing together with other artists. She also visited Denmark to record some songs for her coming solo album, and had 2 performances at the week-long festival Køge Festuge close to Copenhagen.  In December 2014, she began a residency at Fotaerios club in Athens. In February 2015, Greek broadcaster NERIT announced that she was selected as one of five acts bidding to represent Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015.  The national final to select the act took place on 4 March 2015. Shaya is currently signed to the record label Planetworks.  Her music is available on iTunes.

She Rocks! Michelle Foster - Chemical Engineer Living the American Dream as a Nonprofit CEO

CEO Michelle Foster of KISRA (Kanawha Institute for Social Research and Action) gives a thumbs up for her pet project, an urban farm across from KISRA’s Dunbar headquarters. The huge garden with two greenhouses trains clients in farming skills and markets the locally grown produce. A Guyana native, Michelle was a chemical engineer at Carbide in West Virginia as before opting to run the highly successful KISRA nonprofit program.

Born and raised in Guyana, Michelle immigrated to New York as a teenager and envisioned a lifelong career in chemical engineering. A chemical engineering post at Carbide took her to Charleston, Virginia where she discovered the Ferguson Baptist Church in Dunbar. In 1993, through the church, she started a youth program that opened her eyes to other problems — hunger, debt, jobs, housing and especially ex-inmates needing a jumpstart on restarting their lives. Today, she’s another kind of engineer. Social engineering, she calls it. She’s CEO of KISRA (Kanawha Institute for Social Research and Action), a wildly successful faith-based nonprofit that provides day care, employment and housing help, family planning, counseling and all sorts of other resources aimed at bettering borderline lives.

Michelle Foster

Michelle Foster

It started modestly in the basement of the church and mushroomed into one of the largest programs of its kind in the state. In 2008, KISRA moved into a large, renovated building on Perkins Avenue, in Dunbar. No one is more amazed at KISRA’s success than the woman in charge. But then, she has a perfectly acceptable explanation. It’s God’s work, she says.  Here is Michelle’s personal story from a 2104 interview with The Charleston Gazette.

“I was born in Guyana, in South America, the oldest child of three. I have a brother and sister. My dad was an accountant and mom was an educator. There was a lot of poverty, but we never knew it. My parents were great role models. They worked hard and valued education. They were always learning. There were periods when we lived with our grandparents because my parents were always going to university.

“We left Guyana when I was 17 and moved to Brooklyn. It was exciting. We’d heard great stories about America, where you got what you wanted. Almost heaven.

“My mom’s sisters had immigrated. They were nurses recruited by hospitals to work in Brooklyn. They sponsored my mom. We came for a better way of life.

“It wasn’t a bed of roses. Guyana was a tropical country, so we were coming into the cold. We came in April, 1984, so the weather was fairly mild. There was a lot of adjusting, just getting around in New York.

“I am very thankful for the support I received from my aunts. We lived with them until my parents were able to buy a home. I saw them starting from scratch with their careers and never complaining. They made a whole new life for us.

“I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be. I knew I liked math and science. I signed up at City University of New York. One of my friends said, ‘Oh, Michelle, you are so good at calculus and chemistry, why don’t you be a chemical engineer?’ I looked it up and thought it sounded nice. I switched to a school with a chemical engineer program.

“I graduated in 1990. I had a job offer with BP Research in Cleveland. My friends thought I was crazy for leaving New York for Cleveland. They thought I was going to the boonies, but I was brave and went forward.

“I was at BP about two and a half years. Then they were downsizing and offering very lucrative packages, and I took one. Carbide recruited me, and that’s what brought me to West Virginia in ‘93.

“It was a positive change. When I was leaving Cleveland, one of my friends said, ‘When you go to West Virginia, just look for a church and you will be fine.’ I found the Ferguson Memorial Baptist Church.

“At Carbide, when a new employee came in, they put up a bio and a photo around the buildings and people would come by and welcome you. Someone who welcomed me told me about the church and that the pastor was from Guyana. That sounded interesting.

“That changed the direction of my life. I was just coming here to be an engineer. I started volunteering at church. I led vacation Bible school and it kind of evolved. I brought a new youth program to the church, called Pioneer Club. There was  a need for a structured youth program. There were hundreds of kids in the building.

untitled

In 1990, Michelle Foster celebrated her graduation from City College of New York in Brooklyn with her parents, Winston and Muline Mickle. She received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.

“We realized a number of the kids were having trouble reading the Bible verses and we started a literacy program. Pastor (Emmanuel) Heyliger mentioned that a couple had done the nonprofit paperwork for KISRA but had moved on.

“It was to be an organization to raise funds to do the work we were trying to do. I’d had no experience with nonprofits. It wasn’t in my world at all. I got a grant application in the mail and I applied for it. I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t get the grant. But this lady, Helena Lee, called me in and went through the application with me and explained what each system meant.

“She said there was a planning grant coming up for a smaller amount. She suggested I apply just to learn the process. I got that grant and built and built on that. I learned as I went along.

“We started out in the basement of the church in classrooms used for Sunday School. We started an after-school program.  Pastor Heyliger said we needed to do more to help our kids. It evolved.

“We realized how many needs the kids were facing. They were hungry. We started serving snacks. They were faced with so many pathologies in the home. A number were from single family homes, so we started doing more to help people repair their credit and buy homes. We had to work beyond the kids to the extended family. It evolved to workforce development programs and programs for people wanting to buy homes.

“In 2006, we had started a Responsible Father program to work with noncustodial dads. As many as 60 percent of the kids we were serving were from female heads of households. And 60-plus percent of the guys we were reaching had a criminal background. We had to go a little deeper. We established a partnership with the Division of Corrections and started working in prisons with people on the way out to get them acclimated and give them skills and access to resources with the hope that they don’t return. That saves our state $25,000 plus. So it’s an economic issue, reducing the flow in and out of prison.

“Our work with parents and fathers had taken us to 20-plus counties. A couple of our programs are statewide, like our microloan program where we can lend new and existing businesses up to $50,000. We also have a statewide matched savings program, our individual development account program where someone within a certain income bracket can save toward a home a business or an education and can get that savings matched up to $8 for $1 saved.

“We have family planning, behavioral health and after-school programs only in Kanawha County.

“The farm is across the street. That is only here in Dunbar, but we are looking to replicate. That came out of our Fatherhood Responsibility program. A number of fathers have backgrounds that prevent them from getting employment. We wanted to create a social enterprise where we can hire ourselves. We used some of our funding to set up an urban farm that has two greenhouses and outdoor lots. It includes farm skills and culinary training. We teach participants how to grow and hire them to work on the farm.

“They can stay with us or move on to other employers. We sell the plants we grow and put proceeds back to the farm. We have a catering service for someone who wants quality catering with locally grown foods. We also have a food truck. We go to Live on the Levee and to some employers. We started a Wellness Wednesday at CASCI.

“It’s all about creating jobs for people who need a helping hand. A lot of these guys want to work but just need a hand up as opposed to a handout.

“There is such a demand for locally grown foods. We are serving customers in Huntington and Parkersburg. We are looking at replicating the farm in Beckley. We’re working on a food hub where we can work with other farmers and create a larger volume of produce to serve more people.

“I’m amazed at what God has done. None of us envisioned the KISRA dream evolving into what it has become. I believe the half has not yet been told. There is still so much more.

“There is such a demand for locally grown foods. We are serving customers in Huntington and Parkersburg. We are looking at replicating the farm in Beckley. We working on a food hub where we can work with other farmers and create a larger volume of produce to serve more people.

“Chemical engineering seems so long ago. I never looked back. When I first started, the church paid me a salary to develop KISRA, so I had a decrease of salary, of course. I never missed a meal or a mortgage. I went through a divorce at that time. While I was married, I was putting up with a lot because I had a fear of being alone. But God was able to take care of me in going through this change of career, so why wouldn’t He give me the strength I needed to get out of a bad situation?

“The funny thing now is, we are converting our greenhouses to hydroponic, so it’s like I’m going back. I’m  going to take training to learn how to operate the system hydroponically, so I feel I am going back to engineering in a strange kind of way. I guess you’d say I’m a social engineer.

“This building opened in 2008. We thought we had all this room, and we moved in and ran out of space. We have a house we rent in Charleston and have offices in Parkersburg, Winfield and Huntington, Beckley and Princeton.

“I’m in a good place. I’m working on getting some balance in my life. I make sure I schedule time off so I can do things with my family. Most of my family is in New York, so I’m traveling a lot more.

“I’m thankful to for the great team I have. They make coming to work a joy. I’m living the American Dream, realizing that there is no limit. No one should put limits on themselves.”

Happy National Honesty Day! Honest Hearts Produce Honest Actions!

Honesty is vital to making effective changes and identifying who you really are and what you really want. When you lie about who you are or what you really believe, you reinforce the idea that you need to pretend to be someone else or that you are not fundamentally “good enough”. Worse you undermine virtually every other key principle for self improvement because they are based on the premise that you have identified your authentic self and your goals. This is impossible to achieve if you are denying or deceiving yourself. Without the truth of who you are and what you really want, you cannot have clarity in life and you cannot achieve your dreams because you have no true direction false, being honest actual simplifies life considerably and releases an enormous amount of life energy from propping up complex and often completely useless webs of lies and pretenses, that can now be channeled into something you really want to do.

Honesty

The good news is that with practice being honest gets a lot easier, especially when you realize that others start to identify your authenticity and their respect grows accordingly. Furthermore you will be considered a far more reliable and balanced person because everyone will know exactly where they are with you.

About Guyana…

Guyana, officially the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, is a sovereign state on the Caribbean coast of South America. Although Guyana is part of the Anglophone Caribbean, it is one of the few Caribbean countries that are part of South America. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM), of which Guyana is a member, has its secretariat’s headquarters in Guyana’s capital, Georgetown. Guyana was originally colonised by the Netherlands. Later, it became a British colony, known as British Guiana, and remained so for over 200 years until it achieved independence on 26 May 1966 from the United Kingdom. On 23 February 1970, Guyana officially became a republic. In 2008, the country joined the Union of South American Nations as a founding member.
